Screven County was created by an Act of the General Assembly of Georgia, December 14th, 1793. It was named for General James Screven. The first county seat and courthouse were located at the home of Benjamin Lanier at what is now Rocky Ford. In the first election held in Screven County, January 20th, 1794, William Coursey was elected the County’s first Sheriff. The county government was originally located in Jacksonborough but was moved to Sylvania in 1847. For 231 years the Screven County Sheriff’s Office has played a crucial role in maintaining order and providing services to the citizens of Screven County and the communities of Hiltonia, Newington, Oliver, Rocky Ford, Sylvania and others. The county has a total area of 655.59 square miles and borders the Savannah River and the Ogeechee River.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office plays a crucial role in maintaining order and providing services to the citizens of Screven County. The office also handles various duties, including warrant service, civil paper service, evidence custody, fingerprinting and criminal history checks for various purposes, including employment and licensing.
Norman Royal was elected Sheriff of Screven County on November 5, 2024, On January 1, 2025, he replaced Mike Kile who had served as Sheriff for 54 years.
